This programme explores the wide range of American song in the 20th century. The deep romanticism of Griffes’s settings of Fiona Macleod (a pseudonym for Scotsman William Sharp) is juxtaposed with the nostalgia of Barber’s profound setting of James Agee. Margaret Bonds bridges the gap between European tradition and jazz Americana, and the recital ends with one of the greatest composers and lyricists of our generation: Stephen Sondheim.
