The new Birmingham Conservatoire will be home to Birmingham’s only dedicated jazz venue, and talent like pianist Elliott Samson help to demonstrate why this is long overdue.

Shortlisted for this years BBC Young Jazz Musician competition, Elliott is a great success story for the jazz scene in Birmingham, coming through from school in Dorridge to the Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra, via the Birmingham Junior Conservatoire, to being a leading student on Birmingham Conservatoire’s jazz course.  He is hotly tipped as one to watch and expected to start playing a major part on the professional music scene soon.

In this hour long concert, Elliott presents a set with his trio - with Ben Muirhead on double bass and Billy Weir on drums - drawing on Elliott’s exploration of the harmonic and rhythmic language shared in both jazz and classical music. Alongside them, and in contrast, The Birmingham Conservatoire trio featuring Jiafeng Chen (violin), Jiaxin Lloyd Webber (cello) and Di Xiao (piano), present their debut concert with music by Bach, Debussy, Paganini and Mendelssohn.
