Forsyth Concerto for Viola and Orchestra in G minor
Mussorgsky orch. Ravel Pictures at an Exhibition
Ravel’s virtuosic orchestration turned Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition from a piano showpiece into a colourful mainstay of the orchestral repertoire. This much-loved work is paired here with Cecil Forsyth’s less well-known, but highly significant Viola Concerto. This remarkable piece, premiered at the London Proms in 1903, not only provides a platform to showcase the real strength and technical power of the viola, but also possesses great energy in its own orchestration. The concert opens with a brand new piece by student composer Chris Cresswell.
