Research Seminar: Professor Rebecca Herissone - 'A Complete and Correct Score': Music Printing and Creativity in Late Seventeenth Century England
Public Research Seminar Series
Tickets available on the door
This presentation investigates how detailed textual study of Restoration printed music challenges our longstanding association of publication with the notion of textual fixity. Using examples from Purcell’s music, Professor Rebecca Herissone, from the University of Manchester, demonstrates how music printing can preserve creativity in unexpected ways, with significant implications for today’s performers. The talk focuses on handwritten corrections to Purcell’s self-published score of his 1691 opera The Prophetess, or the History of Dioclesian.
