The Conservatoire’s departments of Early Music and Jazz combine to explore improvisatory formats old and new.

Improvisation within classical music was a very common part of performance practice up until around the time that Beethoven started to write out the cadenzas for his concertos. Prior to this, Renaissance and Early Baroque performers fully expected to improvise as well as recite. In this concert you will hear popular forms for improvising such as Bergamasca, Passacaglia, Passemezzo and ground bass. Approaches will vary from stylistically authentic to contemporary jazz.
