Strauss Metamorphosen, TrV 290

The depth and expressive qualities of the string orchestra are demonstrated in this programme of contrasting pieces, from Mozart’s powerful Adagio and Fugue through to Richard Strauss’s timeless masterpiece, Metamorphosen.

The general mayhem caused by the Second World War and the destruction of many of the great opera houses of Germany fuelled an overwhelming sense of disillusionment in Strauss, prompting the composition of his heartfelt eulogy Metamorphosen, in which he quotes from the funeral march of Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony.
