'Further Afield' is a contemporary jazz project led by Birmingham-based trumpeter and composer Ashton Smith. This gig will première a new suite of music inspired by Ashton’s travels outside of England. Influenced by the music of greats such as Kenny Wheeler and Charles Mingus, and the contemporary writing of New York based alto-saxophonist Patrick Cornelius, Ashton’s own music is reflective of his personal experiences away from home.

Capturing the vibe of the locations through the octet’s interpretation of the music, each movement of the suite represents a different place in the world.

The Ashton Smith Octet features some of the finest musicians on the Birmingham scene:

Ashton Smith trumpet and flugelhorn
James Romaine alto saxophone
Michael Anning tenor saxophone
David Sear trombone
Francis Tulip guitar
Will Markham piano
James Owston bass
Nathan Jones drums
