Computer Games Technology - BSc (Hons)
Going to university was something Lewis always wanted to do. As a professional eSports player, Lewis has been able to combine his passion for video games in the technical context of programming, and is now looking to launch his career by creating his very own indie game.
"Before coming to university, I was a professional eSports Player. When I was doing that, my time was spent travelling to different countries with my team to compete in tournaments for cash prizes against other teams from around the world.
To get to that point, I would spend over eight hours a day practising in order to stay at the top level, as well as an extra three hours practising with my team. Ultimately it was the equivalent to a full-time job and was very demanding as there were no days off. It was an amazing experience, but I wanted to broaden my skills.
I've always wanted to go to university to study computer programming. I’ve known that to be able to work in this industry, I would need to gain a lot more knowledge and experience in the subject, so enrolling on an undergraduate degree seemed like the perfect opportunity to achieve this.
I’ve always had an interest in video games since I was a kid and when I discovered the BSc Computer Games Technology course at BCU, which combined programming in a video game context, I knew that it was the course for me.
I am most proud of the work I have produced, and how I have exceeded my own expectations. Whenever I received a new module or assignment, I always had doubts that I wouldn’t be able to do it, but with the support from BCU, I have been able to thrive.
The university has provided a lot of support; whether it was guidance on a specific module or providing facilities like the Games Lab, the support was always available whenever it was needed.
After I graduate, I am hoping to create my own independent video game using the skills and knowledge I’ve gained throughout my time on the course and publish it online. I’m not expecting the game to be successful, but creating something of my own and making it available for the world to see has always been a long-term goal of mine."
