iCl is one of our three Innovation Institutes at Birmingham City University.
iCI provides businesses, public and private organisations with tailored support to help them to work in a cross-innovative way, to share information, collaborate and work with other sectors to generate new thinking to tackle major challenges.

Driving interdisciplinary collaboration to provide comprehensive future creative solutions
iCI provides a cross-innovative approach to complex business problems, by providing expertise from across Birmingham City University’s four faculties. Having carefully considered the objectives of your project, we will select academics with creative expertise specifically tailored to drive through practical solutions to your current challenges.
Our key thematic areas
iCI focuses on key themes of activity that match the strengths of our academic expertise and the demands of creative business and other organisations interested in using creative thinking to grow their ideas. These key thematic areas are:
- Digital Technology and media
Examples of current iCI academic and industry collaborations
STEAMlabs - A series of events commencing in March 2017, to encourage creative industry collaborations across the Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths disciplines.
STEAMhouse - An open innovation facility, set to open its doors in late 2017, that will act as a permanent base to encourage STEAM thinking and business collaborations.
Urban Manufacturing - Working with partner institutions across Europe with a view to influencing city policies to encourage innovation.
The Trends Project - An annual collaboration between our Textile Design students and manufacturers, focused on showcasing the future in design trends at industry shows.
Maker Monday - Monthly workshops where individuals interested in tech, digital and the arts come to network and collaborate on innovative projects.
DT. UNI. - This project will explore and develop design-led thinking approaches which support innovation in higher education institutions by using a bottom-up approach.
