Higher and degree apprenticeships are a high-quality alternative to a traditional university degree. They allow students to achieve a higher education qualification while working full-time and gaining experience in the workplace.
The government has set a target of creating three million apprenticeships by 2020 and has set up a new employer-led body - the Institute for Apprenticeships - to regulate quality. Apprenticeships will be funded by a new levy on employers with a payroll bill of £3 million or more.
How do higher or degree apprenticeships work?
Apprentices on these programmes spend part of their time studying at the University and the rest working for one of our partner employers, earning a full-time wage and getting invaluable experience of the workplace. They will work with and make connections with people in their chosen industry, and at the end of their course, they will have between three and six years' work experience and a degree-level qualification.

The Apprenticeship Levy
In Spring 2017 the way the government funds apprenticeships in England changed. Some employers will be required to contribute to a new apprenticeship levy, and there will be changes to the funding for apprenticeship training for all employers.
The government introduced an Employer Levy at 0.5 per cent of the employer's total pay bill for all those who have payroll costs exceeding £3 million. Employers will report and pay their levy to HMRC through the PAYE process.
Once an employer have declared the levy to HMRC, they will be able to access funding for apprenticeships through a new apprenticeship service account. This portal was introduced in October 2016 and rolled out by April 2017, allowing employers to suggest the most appropriate apprenticeship and choose a training provider. Employers that do not pay the levy will not have to use this system until at least 2018.
