Student Tax Clinic

The BCU Student Tax Clinic is the first tax clinic in England where student volunteer advisors provide advice on UK tax issues to their fellow students. All student volunteers working in the tax clinic are supervised by a qualified tax practitioner.

We aim to assist unrepresented taxpayers to resolve their tax problems, to provide them with the information required to manage their tax affairs and to be a source of free information about UK taxation.

Initial consultations will take place by appointment online via MS teams.

The UK tax system is complex and dynamic with frequent changes and updates. The clinic aims to provide tax assistance to any existing BCU students. Typically this could be:

  • Checking tax and NIC deductions from your pay, particularly if you have multiple jobs
  • Reviewing tax code numbers
  • Guidance on notifying HMRC if you start a business and the possible taxes that you should be aware of
  • Advice on Self-Assessment tax return filing requirements

When you attend an online tax clinic consultation, you will meet volunteer student tax advisers who will take the detail of your tax issue from you. This will be discussed after the meeting with one of our tax professionals before any advice is formally provided. Before any advice is provided you will be required to sign a document agreeing to the terms of use of the BCU tax clinic.

Information provided at the Tax Clinic does not constitute advice. Any action you take as a result of information provided by the clinic is entirely your responsibility.

All personnel working in the Tax Clinic respect the complete confidentiality of those who attend clinic consultations. Notes will be taken of the type of query and information given. These notes may be kept is in line with BCU’s commitment to managing personal data correctly and is underpinned by the University's Data Protection Policy. The University adheres to the principles of the Data Protection Acts 1988-2018 (as may be amended) and the European General Data Protection Regulation in its processing of Personal Data and Special Categories of Personal Data.
