UNIVERSITY NEWS LAST UPDATED : 14 AUGUST 2015
Students worried about racking up debt at university are being offered a three-year degree course featuring a third and final year where they earn significantly more than the tuition fee they have to pay.
Birmingham City University's new course, Business (Professional Practice), allows students to earn as they learn and cut the overall cost of securing a degree – as well as improving their chances of securing a permanent graduate level job at the end of the course.
The course will see students study for two years before undertaking a one-year work placement focused on developing professional practice skills. A business survey recently suggested 31% of graduate jobs went to people who have already had placements or employment with an organisation.
It’s vital that universities are helping students to become job-ready, which this course is entirely focused on doing. The fact we are also offering students the chance to recoup a sizeable chunk of the cost of securing a degree makes it even more compelling – most students can expect to earn around £14,000 for the year they spend working in a company.”
The BA (Hons) Business (Professional Practice) degree programme looks at fundamental aspects of how businesses work and grow. Students study the business performance of real companies and hear from high profile guest speakers on becoming a business leader or entrepreneur.
In a 2015 CBI education and skills survey, half of respondents urged higher education institutions to do more to improve the business relevance of undergraduate courses.
