Academic Spotlight: Dr Juanling Huang

With a huge variety of wonderful staff members and academics teaching our courses and shaping the futures of our students, we wanted to unpack their stories and discover how they got to where they are now.

Dr Juanling Huang, Course Director for the International MBA course, shares an insight into her career and work.

What do you do at BCU and how long have you been part of the University?

My name is Dr Juanling (Jenny) Huang, and I am the Course Director of the International MBA programme at the Business School. I have been working at BCU for more than 12 years and I have been teaching and managing various modules of the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. I am also working as the Link Tutor with our international partnerships in Singapore and Hong Kong.

Could you tell us about your experience and how this feeds into your teaching?

I have completed my PhD in Business and Management, specialised in Logistics and Supply Chain Management. I have worked in the logistics and shipping industry in the UK, Europe and Asia, which provides good academic and practical experience in the modules that we teach on the International MBA programme.

What makes the course you teach on distinct and what is the learning environment like?

The International MBA programme provides comprehensive knowledge for students to develop their skills in business administration with international contexts, especially as our students come from diverse backgrounds with education and work experiences. Our experienced teaching team also contribute to providing good level of academic and practical experience in the specific fields in business, management, finance, and marketing, which enhances the student learning experience with insights and knowledge.

The lectures, seminars and workshops are practical and interactive, as students are engaged in practical learning which is beneficial to their career development as managers and even CEOs in international business operations. 

Why do you think Birmingham is a good place to study?

The Business School is based in The Curzon Building which provides  a modern and business setting environment that supports students to transition into their business-oriented career path. The space and resources in the library stimulate creative and critical thinking which are valuable assets for future managers.

Students can participate in many exciting business activities and events, and easily get access to traditional corporations and new start-up business opportunities.

What can students do to help prepare them for the courses you teach?

For students who come to study after taking a career break, they should come with an open mind and look to share their work experience when engaging with academic education. The modern business studies are not about learning and memorising business theories and concepts, but practical learning and application of theories in various business scenarios. 

For students coming to the UK with an international background and associated experiences, they should also come with an open mind to explore UK education and living styles, and be able to adapt to the local culture, the British language and diversity.
