Travel Dates: 15 - 28 April (subject to slight change depending on flights)

Over two weeks, travel to the Chinese Provinces of Shanghai, Jiangnan & Jiangsu, exploring the cities of Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou and Shanghai, whilst visiting four Chinese Universities and collaborating with local students!

Immerse yourself in traditional Chinese culture through the busy schedule of local visits and workshops including Chinese ‘kong-fu’, calligraphy and leather making, all rounded off with a final celebratory night at the world-famous Pearl of the Orient revolving restaurant!

Shanghai is located in the Yangtze River Delta, bordered by Jiangsu, Zhejiang and the East China Sea, in the middle portion of the East China coast. It is the largest city in China by population, and the second most populous city proper in the world, with a population of 24.18 million as of 2017. It is a global financial centre and transport hub, with the world’s busiest container port. Shanghai has been described as the “showpiece” of the booming economy of mainland China, renowned for its Luijazui skyline, and museums and historic buildings, such as those along The Bund, as well as the City God Temple and the Yu Garden.

Shanghai Jian Qiao University (SJQU)

Shanghai Jian Qiao University is one of the most famous private Universities in mainland China. It is composed of 10 colleges and has a focus on undergraduate education, developing special applied talents for production, management and service. In 2015 SJQU relocated to a new campus (Lingang) located in by the beautiful Dishui Lake, on the coach of the East China Sea.

Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, East China

Suzhou is a major economic centre and focal point of trade and commerce. It is the second largest city in the province, located in the Yangtze River Delta region. Suzhou has over 2,500 years of history, with an abundant display of relics and sites of historical interest. Suzhou is often dubbed the “Venice of the East”, and The Classic Gardens of Suzhou are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city’s canals, stone bridges, pagodas and meticulously designed gardens have contributed to its status as one of the top tourist attractions in China.

Suzhou Art & Design Technology Institute

Initially established in 1958 with the name of Suzhou Arts & Design School, its history dates back to Suzhou School of Art; set up in 1922 by Yan Wenliang, a renowned oil painter and art educator in China. Since merging with Suzhou Light Industrial Vocational University in 1999, it became one of the first model higher vocational institutions in Jiangsu Province.

The institute is well equipped with facilities and staff, with a focus on the “fine abilities, superior skills and noble character”, “enrichment and brilliance” of its students.

Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, East China

Wuxi is a famous historical and cultural city noted for its modern industry and commerce, located in southern Jiangsu province. Covering a coastline of the Yangtze River, it borders two separate coasts of Lake Tai, the cities of Changzhou and Suzhou, and the Zhejiang Province. It is known by many different names including “land of fish and rice”, “money wharf” and “silk capital”.

Jiangnan University (JU)

Jiangnan University last year celebrated 60 years of independent existence, although its roots can be traced back to 1902! It is known as “the pearl of China’s higher education in light industry” and has the motto “learning and practice to perfection”. It is located by the picturesque Taihu Lake and Chungguangxi Wetland Part and designed with the concept of “eco-campus”.

Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, East China

Changzhou, previously known as Yanling, Lanling and Jinling, is located on the southern bank of the Yangtze River in southern Jiangsu Province. Famous local handicrafts including include silk embroidery in a crisscross style and carvings made from green bamboo, and noted snacks made in Changzhou include pickled radish, sesame candy, sweet glutinous rice flour dumpling with fermented glutinous rice, and silver thread noodles – otherwise known as ‘dragon’s beard noodles’!

Jiangsu University of Technology (JUST)

Jiangsu University of Technology has a history dating back to 1866, it has taught in a range of areas from Shipbuilding, Machinery and Marine Engineering, to Agricultural Sciences, and Business! Currently occupying four campuses JUST is now an engineering focused University with distinctive characteristics, which has formed a well-established talent training system of bachelor, masters and doctoral degree programmes. It is a University of recognised excellence by the Ministry of Education of China.


  • 20 places available to Level 4 & 5 Undergraduate students by application and interview only.
  • Students will pay £500: inclusive of all flights (economy class), accommodation and local transportation in China, visa arrangements, application fee and associated costs, administrative fees for cultural visits, lectures and business visits, and a final celebratory meal at the world-famous Shanghai Orient Pearl Tower.
  • Students will also receive a Faculty T-Shirt and bag!
  • Full cost of trip is approximately £1950.00 per person.
  • Flights will be inclusive of one piece of checked luggage per person.
  • Students will be hosted by the four Universities for the duration of the trip, and will be staying in University Campus accommodation where possible. If/ where this is not possible, the group will reside in budget accommodation as recommended by the host Universities. Rooms will be shared with BCU students only.
  • Outcome will be shared via BCU email on 20/02/19 and a group meeting to discuss the trip and collate documents and complete your visa application will be held w/c 25/02/19 (date TBC). This session is compulsory and you must bring your passport. Please monitor your mailbox and ensure you are able to attend an interview on 21st and 22nd February.

  • The Faculty will cover visa application costs and arrange a group visit to the Visa Application Centre in Manchester to submit applications. This is compulsory and failure to attend the scheduled Visa sessions could result in withdrawal from the trip.

  • Please note that the Faculty Study Trip, including work produced, does not contribute to the units which students are studying.

Please confirm that you have read and understood the following:
* You are available to attend an interview to join this trip on Thursday 21st & Friday 22nd February 2019
* You must provide a copy of your passport at the first planned meeting w/c 25th February 2019
* Your passport is valid for at least 6 months from 25th March 2019
* You must be available w/c 25th February (date TBC) to visit the Chinese Visa Centre in Manchester and provide your biometrics. This is now an essential part of the visa application for China*. The University will pre-book visa appointments and provide a coach to take the group
* You must pay a contribution of £500 towards the trip
* Full payment must be received not later than 12/04/2019, including a £100 deposit to be paid by 31/03/19
* If you are successful in your application/ interview and selected for the final group but withdraw from the trip at a later date, the University will return your contribution after deducting the total of any non-refundable bookings that the University may have already incurred

* As of 1 November 2018, China has introduced the requirement for all visa applicants aged between 14 and 70 inclusive to submit their visa application in person at a Visa Application Centre.
