The importance of education to tackling racism

Patrick Hutchinson went viral for carrying a white counter-protester to safety at a BLM demonstration. He has since published "Everyone Against Racism: A Letter to My Children".

Criminology MA - 1200x450 - Woman talking to a classroom

On Thursday 7 January, Patrick joined the Black Studies team, including staff and students, from Birmingham City University for an online discussion on the importance of education to social and political activism.

At BCU, we have the only Black Studies undergraduate degree courses in the UK, and we are also launching a Master's degree in the subject in September 2021. Black Studies matters in understanding the nature of our problems and, also, in helping us to find the solutions.

You can watch the whole discussion, featuring School of Social Sciences staff members Professor Kehinde Andrews, Dr Dionne Taylor and Dr Tony Talburt, and chaired by BA (Hons) Black Studies graduate Caprice Bound, below.
