Can you tell us a little more about your project?
As consumers become tired of the quick-fix approach, a new trend is emerging that embraces a stripped-back style with focus on primitive and raw processes. This collection celebrates the natural properties of clay bodies, highlighting unique forms that embrace raw aesthetics.
How important is being able to exhibit externally?
Being able to exhibit externally is really important for students as it gives us the chance to showcase our work – a lot of effort and time goes into projects so it’s great that people outside of the University get to give feedback. It also gives us a chance to network and find people with similar design interests.
What has your highlight of the course been so far?
The highlight of the course so far for me was being able to showcase at Minima last year – it was my first attempt at showing my work and it was a set of objects I was really proud of. It was also a bonus when one of the Senior Architecture lecturers purchased a set!
Could you tell us a little more about your design interests?
I am very designer-maker oriented and I love working with raw materials. The most important things to me are continually learning and developing my making skills throughout projects while maintaining strong aesthetics. My main design interests are ceramics, where I love experimenting with different materials and on the opposite end of the spectrum, I have found a strong passion for Brutalism through my dissertation research.
What advice would you give to someone considering studying Product and Furniture Design at BCU?
I would say that this course will give you the opportunity to learn skills you wouldn’t find with any other subject. Creative courses are great as they allow you to get hands on and produce physical objects to accompany your time at university and this course specifically allows you to tailor projects to suit your design style. I’m very glad I chose Product and Furniture Design at BCU and I believe it has set me up to be successful after my time here is finished.
