Tibor Reich drawing exhibition

The Parkside Gallery is pleased to host this free exhibition, exploring the drawings of one of the UK’s most prolific textile designers and manufacturers, Tibor Reich (1916-96). The work on display aligns to Reich’s commercial success and demonstrates how he used drawing to explore the endless possibilities of design and application of pattern.

Born in Hungary, Tibor Reich moved to the UK in the 1930s having already studied architecture and textiles in Vienna. After completing his studies, Reich took over a 19th century mill in Stratford-upon-Avon. It was here that he found commercial success, producing richly constructed woven and printed textiles, rugs, tiles and ceramics. His company worked with prolific clients including the Queen and undertook commissions for Concorde, The Festival of Britain and the QE2 among others.

The drawings in this exhibition were key to his success as a highly innovative designer and an integral means of expression and communication. Tibor was a constant collector of ideas, picking up inspiration wherever he went – to him everything was interesting. The work ranges from visual journals sent back to his family in Hungary, to sketches undertaken on family holidays, to characters and compositions inspired by Hungarian folk art and architecture.

The exhibition shows how Reich constantly used everything in his life to inspire his work and vice versa. It has been compiled from a collection in the Reich family archive of over 10,000 drawings spanning seven decades and celebrates Reich’s relentless vision that everything was an idea, everything was a design and everything was a surface to draw on.
