Roy Howat (Keyboard Research Fellow at the Royal Academy of Music and Research Fellow at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland; also Research Associate at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University) is editing Chopin’s 27 Études as part of the Peters Edition new Complete Edition of Chopin.
Despite the plethora of existing editions, much still emerges from studying manuscripts and early editions, often solving problems that have long puzzled pianists, and casting several pieces in a different light from how they have been long perceived. The whole project works to defined editorial guidelines drawn up by a board of renowned Chopin specialists, designed to offer players a full range of viable variants from original sources while clarifying what comes from where and belongs with what.
