Public Research Seminar: Helen Roberts (Royal Birmingham Conservatoire) and Catherine Motuz (Schola Cantorum, Basel): Durham Cathedral in the 1620s and 1630s: A liturgical context for historical improvisation?
This is an interactive session exploring the case for improvised music within the context of early 17th-century Durham Cathedral. We will introduce the musical and liturgical background of the cathedral at the time, along with contemporary accounts of services there that provide vital clues to performance practices. We will then lead attendees through three historical improvisation techniques, discussing how each may have found a place in the soundscape of the cathedral during this period.
