Director Chris Mapp
Support from newly created, cross-departmental student ensemble.
Inspired by the ethos of Punkt Festival (Norway), this new project draws on the festival's fundamental principles of improvisation, remixing and the use of electronic instruments in live performance. In preparation for a collaboration with Punkt Festival in 2020 this new ensemble of students, from the composition, jazz and music technology departments, will develop their own material in workshops with PhD student Chris Mapp in the days leading up to this performance.
Chris's trio Stillefelt, with Percy Pursglove and Thomas Seminar Ford, will play the second set. Stillefelt is a new project created to explore the development of composition, improvisation and electronics. The name is taken from the Norwegian words stille (quiet) and felt (field), reflecting both the music's timbral qualities and the inspiration behind this project. The trio combines three of Birmingham's hardest working improvisers, and together they have played warmly received sets at Manchester Jazz Festival and Symphony Hall. A new album is scheduled for release on Stoney Lane Records in the Autumn.
