Barokksolistene - The Alehouse Sessions
Victoria Square, Birmingham, West Midlands, B3 3DQ
Pre-concert performance at 6:30pm featuring harpsichord player Róza Bene – winner of the 2018 THSH Recital Prize in conjunction with the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.
Bjarte Eike director
In the late 17th century, when English theatres were closing under Puritan rule, musicians moved to the alehouses to play intimate concerts to enthusiastic and thirsty audiences. Purcell and other known composers could also be found here, presenting their new works or engaging in lively musical duels with local musicians.
Founded and led by Norwegian violinist Bjarte Eike, acclaimed Baroque ensemble Barokksolistene’s Alehouse Sessions will transform the Town Hall into one of these so-called Musick-Houses, with folk songs of the time featuring alongside music by Purcell and others. Expect folky, seductive and sparkling music, accompanied by anecdotes, humour and beer.
