The Beggar’s Opera

A sophisticated take on the ever-popular folk opera by John Gay that was the smash hit of the day in 18th century London.

Gay's original 1728 libretto plays with parody and satire, poking fun at the fashionable Handel operas of his day. Britten's updated arrangement of 1948 breathed new harmonic and orchestral vigour into the drama and is performed here by the members of our vocal department.
