What responsibility should schools have in delivering sex education to children?

Join us on Wednesday 5 October as a leading panel of experts discuss and debate some of the issues around the delivery of sex education in schools.

Our panel will discuss the current curriculum; the role of the school versus parents; the implications on children; and the changes that need to be made to ensure that every child receives appropriate sex education.

James Bovill is an award-winning journalist with more than 8 years’ experience in local, regional and network radio and television. James is a graduate from our School of Media and now works for BBC Midlands Today, local radio and as Political Reporter for BBC Sunday Politics West Midlands..

Sarah Darton is currently Director of Programmes at Family Links, a national charity and training organisation promoting emotional health in families, schools and communities. She has had a passion for supporting parents and promoting the social and emotional wellbeing of children since she qualified as a health visitor in 1985.

Keeley Abbott
Dr Keeley Abbott

Dr Keeley Abbott is a Lecturer in Social Psychology at Birmingham City University. She teaches critical psychology, gender and sexualities. Keeley also researches how content and practice within sex and relationship education (SRE) influences young people’s developing sexual subjectivities.

Dr Alex Wade

Dr Alex Wade is Senior Research Fellow in the School of Education at Birmingham City University.  His research interests focus on the links between learning and technology.  He has recently completed a research project with colleagues from BCU and Warwick University studying sexting and young people.   

Javed Khan
Javed Khan

Birmingham born Javed is CEO of children's charity Barnardo’s. He joined in 2014, bringing with him over 28 years' experience working in the UK public and voluntary sectors. He's responsible for over 8,000 staff and 15,000 volunteers, who together run over 900 services in local communities for vulnerable children.
