Creative job searching

It’s not such a secret… We've all heard stories about great jobs found in unusual ways – a friend of a friend, a conversation overheard in the supermarket, being in the right place at the right time. Not all jobs are advertised and this is the advantage of the secret jobs market…

  1. Start with your own contacts – friends, family, previous employers – let them know you are looking for work
  2. Join LinkedIn – social networking is a great way to expand your network and this site even tells you about relevant jobs that are being posted
  3. Don’t be afraid to temp – temporary work not only gets you vital experience and an income but can sometimes lead to full-time permanent work
  4. “Put in a good word” – know someone in your target companies? Ask them to highlight your name to those that are recruiting; this helps to raise your profile and if they know your name it will make your application stand out.
