Work experience and internships

Undertaking work experience is a great way to find out more about employers, jobs and different careers. At the same time, it will improve your employability, strengthen your CV and help you stand out from other graduates. There are different types of work experience and it's important to understand the difference so you can choose what is most appropriate for you.

Work shadowing

A more informal type of work experience, where you 'shadow' or observe a member of staff performing their day to day job. This type of experience can be valuable to help you find out more about a job or career. It is also the easiest to arrange, as it requires less organisation from the employer. Many people find work shadowing opportunities by calling companies directly.

Voluntary work

This is essentially volunteering your services for free, perhaps for charity or fundraising work. The passion and commitment associated with volunteering shows employers a lot about your character and can be a valuable addition to your CV. You may even be able to help out in a role that’s close to your chosen career route, such as event management or HR. See our volunteering section for more information.

Work experience for disabled students

A number of organisations provide specific placements and support for students with disabilities. Find out more, including your employment rights on our Disability Support pages.
