Psychometric assessments

What are psychometric tests?

Psychometric tests are used by recruiters to assess ability aptitude and personality. They are increasingly used by employers to see how you perform in a variety of tasks. They also give you the opportunity to demonstrate a range of skills, including communication, time management and team working skills as well as personal attributes such as motivation.

What can I expect?

Tests are often taken under exam conditions and are usually timed. They are designed to measure your intellectual capability for thinking and reasoning: some are meant to be very difficult.

How do I prepare for a psychometric test?

You cannot revise for an aptitude test as you would an exam, but you can prepare yourself. Firstly, you should find out exactly what your aptitude test will entail. In a numeracy test, you may be allowed to use a calculator, but if not, then you should try to practice without using one. A quick brush up on basic maths formulas, such as percentages, is a good idea.

You should try out an aptitude test to get used to how they work. Birmingham City University has a licence for you to take some online practice aptitude tests with Team Focus. For further details, see the "Online Practice Test" section below.

Do: Familiarise yourself with sample tests and take a practice test, either online or by using the many resources available in the Student Services library or the main University library.

Do: Check out the information on how to master psychometric tests and develop strategies for the delay.

Do: Contact the administrator in advance if there are any factors likely to affect you performance e.g. Dyslexia: or if English is not you first language.

Do not: Have a late night before the test session.
