Web and Social Media

DMT Web and Social MediaThe Web and Social Media Technology team researches technologies related to the use of digital media for enabling social activities via the internet. It is particularly interested in enhancing interaction between organisations and the consumers of their services. The group will often work with the other research groups for the production and manipulation of digital media, including sound, real images and video, and virtual or animated environments.

Research staff include Andy White, Mat Randall, Paul Summers, Sandi Kirkham and George Squires.

Current projects

  • PeerView is the development of an online reciprocal peer review tool with relevant graphical and system design. Data has been collected and analysed from both student and staff involved in the piloting of the tool on various undergraduate modules.
  • The Web and Social Media Technology Group is also developing a number of projects jointly with the Centre for Media and Cultural Studies in the Birmingham School of Media, and the Institute of Digital Experience and Applications (IDEA) – the cross-university project for digital participation.

Recent projects

The group is actively involved in commenting on and collaboratively reviewing media and particularly video as part of a KTP Industrial Project with Gas St Works Ltd, leading to and supporting development of the Reviewspace product.
