5 things you have to do at Birmingham's Frankfurt German Market
Frankfurt’s Christmas Market has once again rolled into the centre of Birmingham. It’s in full swing until 24 December, so we thought we’d give you a full run down on what not to miss at one of Birmingham’s biggest annual attractions.
1. Start by grabbing some Bratwurst!
A staple of all Christmas markets! Deriving from the German words “brat” meaning finely chopped meat and “wurst” meaning sausage, the ones in Birmingham come in an array of shapes and sizes. The half meter option is the jewel in the German Market’s sausage crown.
2. Follow that Bratwurst up with a crêpe!
Okay, so maybe not something you would associate with Germany, or indeed Christmas, but stay with us! Crêpes have been a staple of the Birmingham Christmas Market for years, and we’re yet to sample better elsewhere. The choice of toppings is massive. Our favourite? Actual chocolate bar melted in the middle!
3. Once you’re all full of food, take a spin on the carousel...
The carousel is the centre piece of the market, sitting proudly at the top of Victoria Square. No matter what your age, you’re never too young or old to hop on a horse and take a spin. If you’re lucky, one of the kind folk who run the ride may even hop on and take a photo for you. They do this one handed, whilst spinning around backwards! It really is quite a skill.
4. Relax with some retail therapy, German style!
With over 120 stalls, the market is the perfect place to fill your bags with German and Christmas themed goodies for yourself or others. There’s hand crafted ornaments, traditional toys, Bavarian food and all the German knitwear you can dream off. So whether you’re wanting to treat yourself or top up on stocking fillers, the market has it all.
5. Finish your day off in style, by singing with an actual moose! Kind of...
Chris, or Mr Moose if we’re being formal, has become a firm ‘must see’ fixture of the German Market. Positioned by the beer kellers at the top of Victoria Square, Chris Moose is a singing moose who comes alive to belt out all your favourite Christmas classics. Check him out on Twitter @thechrismoose.
What else is happening?
Birmingham's outdoor ice skating rink returns. However this time it has a brand new location on Eastside Green, right outside our city centre campus. There's no excuse to not stop off and have a skate or a ride on the big wheel.
Birmingham Royal Ballet are bringing their production of the world famous Christmas classic back to the Birmingham Hippodrome. Perfect for an evening of Christmas entertainment this festive season.
