From accountant to manager
Having qualified as a chartered accountant in 1981, Colin spent the majority of his career at ICL (now Fujitsu), working in various senior finance roles. He joined Triage Services, the UK’s leading independent IT repair and service specialists, as Finance Director when the company was formed in 1998 and was appointed Managing Director in 2010.
Back in 1979, Birmingham Polytechnic (now Birmingham City University) was one of only a limited number of colleges that offered the full-time Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) course, covering all three professional sections. Colin was attracted to the idea of passing these demanding exams as quickly as possible, rather than studying by correspondence course which would have taken many years.
His first position after graduating was at a small firm of Certified Accountants, preparing accounts and audits for small businesses. After a year he obtained a position as Systems Accountant in ICL, the computer manufacturer that ultimately became part of Fujitsu. He subsequently worked in various finance departments, including Equipment Service, HQ, Service Logistics and European Service, where he was Finance Controller. He was then involved in a management buyout of the repair business, which was renamed Triage Services, where he became Finance Director and then Managing Director.
