Graduate destinations

Each year we undertake a survey of recent UK and EU Birmingham City University graduates to find out whether they are working, studying or taking time out. In addition to publishing our own results, we submit the information to the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) as part of the national Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education Survey (DLHE); we are legally obliged to do this. The data submitted to HESA are used to inform Birmingham City University’s positions in the university league tables published in the Times, the Sunday Times, the Indpendent and the Guardian, and on the Unistats website.

This report identifies those results and provides recommendations for improving future results.

How we collect destinations information

Information is collected following strict HESA guidelines. Graduates are sent up to two questionnaires. Non-respondents are then telephoned during a designated period. An online version of the questionnaire is also available.

All information is displayed anonymously and any personal data is processed in accordance with HESA guidelines on data protection. For more details see the HESA DLHE Collection Notice.

The information gathered from the survey is published annually by HESA and is used to calculate Birmingham City University’s performance against the HEFCE Employment Performance Indicator.

DLHE is designed and strictly controlled by HESA, which sets a response rate target of 80 per cent (for UK-domiciled, full-time leavers) each year.
