Disabled students

Disabled access photoIf you are disabled, or have specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, we offer support throughout your period of study here. We aim to provide an accessible environment and a range of services to help you participate fully in University activities.

Support available

Our Disability and Mental Health Advisers can provide a wide range of advice and support, including:

  • A confidential appointment and drop-in service which provide information and support for disabled students
  • Screening, assessment and support for students with dyslexia and specific learning difficulties
  • Guidance to your faculty and teaching staff about the specific adjustments you will need for exams, assessments, teaching sessions, and course materials and information
  • Support with applications for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) or other funds, and help with arranging needs assessments
  • Advice for unfunded disabled students (such as international students) on funding disability support
  • Study support workers e.g. note-takers, mentors or study skills support via our Personal Assistance Scheme (PAS)
  • Liaison with external agencies such as Social Services for the provision of personal care and living assistance, or with other statutory NHS services
  • Advice about enabling equipment and software
  • An orientation of the campus when you first arrive, information about campus accessibility, car parking and other individual support requirements.

In addition, our Mental Health Advisers can provide:

  • Support if a student has concerns about their own or someone else’s mental health and wellbeing
  • Suggestions about referral resources both internal and external to the University, e.g. counselling services, informal support networks, statutory mental health services, helplines, etc.

Our Pre-Entry Disability Adviser can advise you on what support may be available, and help you apply for funding for your support, including Disabled Students’ Allowance. The process of applying for funding takes an average of 3 months, so you should start as soon as possible.
