Marking Europe Day (Monday 9 May), the leader of Birmingham City University is appealing to students and the general public to take advantage of "a once in a lifetime opportunity", and cast their vote in next month's EU Referendum.
Speaking ahead of an upcoming debate at the University at which MPs from both sides will debate the ‘Future of Europe’, Vice-Chancellor Professor Cliff Allan stressed the importance of taking part in this momentous event.
Figures from last year's UK Parliament general election revealed that over 35 per cent of people in the West Midlands who are currently on the electoral roll, failed to take the opportunity to vote (figures from The Electoral Commission).
Recent changes have also impacted on student voters, who now have to actively register themselves rather than being automatically enrolled by universities, with the potential for some students to miss out on having their vote.
Professor Allan added: "Our 'Future of Europe' event promises to be a lively debate, and for those who are still undecided on which way to vote, an opportunity to put their questions to MPs from both sides.
"The event forms part of the University's successful 'Future Talks' series of events, providing staff, students and the general public with the opportunity to debate timely issues that impact on all of our lives."
Birmingham City University's debate on 'The Future of Europe' will take place on Thursday 26 May, 6.15 – 8pm, at the Curzon Building, Cardigan Street, B4 7BD. The event is free to attend.
Joining the panel are Gisela Stuart MP, Sir Bill Cash MP, Pat McFadden MP, Neena Gill MEP, and Economist Vicky Pryce. The event will be chaired by Frances Robinson, freelance journalist and former EU correspondent for The Wall Street Journal.
