A new report is urging the government to adopt a new definition of Islamophobia as ‘anti-Muslim racism’ and recommends that society takes more responsibility in reporting hateful rhetoric and prejudice.

The ‘Islamophobia: Still A Challenge For Us All’ report features contributions from over 20 academics, including Birmingham City University criminologist Dr Imran Awan.

Research conducted by authors of the report, Runnymede Trust, found that Muslims are facing disadvantages in the jobs market, despite more Muslims going to university than ever before and there now being more Muslim female graduates than males.

Baroness Sayeeda Warsi chaired a parliamentary session to launch the report and praised Dr Awan as being pivotal in helping policy-makers define Islamophobia.

“A new definition of Islamophobia is vital if we are to truly understand this phenomenon”, said Dr Awan.
