Jewellery and Technology

Recent and ongoing developments in technology provide a rich vein of ideas that might drive doctoral level investigations. These include:

  • Sintering and additive manufacturing (the evolution of a new paradigm for jewellery designers and makers?)
  • The deployment of lasers, CAD and 3D printing; developments in jewellery casting (and possible myth-busting in relation to this technique)
  • Historical studies of the relationship between place, technology, innovation and making (for example, technological innovation and the evolution of the jewellery manufacturing industry in Birmingham).
