Centre for Design and Creative Industries

The Centre for Design and Creative Industries is a well-established, interdisciplinary research centre that encompasses a broad range of creative design practices and innovation and external engagement activities.

Whilst we undertake work within the traditional design groupings of architecture, fashion and textiles, jewellery, product design and visual communication, the combination of disciplines housed in the Centre provides an opportunity to build genuinely interdisciplinary design research that addresses complex and emerging themes and challenges.

Architecture

The School of Architecture at Birmingham City University enjoys a long and successful history in research. The range of themes investigated within the discipline is particularly broad and our School houses internationally recognised expertise in many of the most important, evolving and progressive domains of study.

Whilst theory and critical reading underpins our investigation, engagement with real-world problems and challenges is at the heart of the School’s endeavour. Our connections with a network of relevant communities (professional, policy-making and commercial) ensures that our work both informs and is reflective of leading-edge policy and practice at regional, national and international levels.

The School of Architecture particularly welcomes applications for PhD study in the following areas (please note, this list is not definitive – we welcome applications that either fall outside or across the themes listed here).
