Academic study of jewellery design is well-established, however gaps in understanding remain, and new issues emerge with the evolution of technology and novel theory provides new lenses and standpoints. Issues for investigation include: perceptions of customisation and personalisation; manufacturing for design versus design for manufacture; jewellery in a fine metal context; jewellery and ‘new materiality’; and jewellery in the context of remembrance, charity and memento mori.
Jewellery and Art
Themes such as jewellery as art, jewellery in art, and art as jewellery provide fertile ground for further investigation. Hot issues in these domains include: identity and the crossing of boundaries; the ‘ready made’ made new; the ‘obsessive collector’; and, cross-cultural practice.
