Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Alternative electric powertrain options are being developed that could potentially ultimately replace the conventional petrol or diesel fuelled combustion engine. In the meantime the combination of both the conventional and the new in a so called hybrid electric configuration may be a step towards full electrification.

The Centre for Low Carbon Research is currently involved in a number of projects in which the hybrid alternative is implemented, one such project being a partnership with Cranfield and Oxford Universities that is focused on the development of a production intent advanced hybrid electric vehicle for Morgan Motor Company currently branded LIFECar II. In connection with this project the Centre has particularly been investigating issues such as;

  • Vehicle mass v engine performance
  • Engine control re-optimisation and weight reduction

This ‘series’ hybrid configuration makes the design of the LIFECar II both unique and exciting for the project engineers and future Morgan customers.
