To apply for a scholarship, please read the guidelines below, then complete and submit the application form.

These scholarships are only available for people applying for:


Application Guidelines

  • Be sure to read the Criteria and Performance Indicators and our Terms and Conditions carefully before submitting your scholarship application.
  • For all three criteria you should focus on your current professional experiences, this could be your role in an organisation, your freelance work or in your self-employed business.
  • Also be sure to include those networks or projects you are involved in outside your professional role that are relevant to your chosen course.
  • Your scholarship application will only be considered after we have also received your application form, considered it and made you an offer if a place.

Criteria and Performance Indicators

1. Demonstrable achievements in academic or professional practice.

Indicative performance indicators: a very high upper second class or first class honours degree; and/or notable or significant achievement within a profession, entrepreneurial role, or business associated with the named award.

2. Demonstrable benefit to the applicant in studying their chosen course.

Indicative performance indicators: the opportunity to improve and learn skills appropriate for current professional role; and/or the opportunity to add to the performance of the applicant in their current freelance, entrepreneurial or employed role; and/or the opportunity to move on to a more advanced role, or to advance the field.

3. Demonstrable level of contribution the applicant will provide to their chosen course.

Indicative performance indicators: distinctive professional knowledge, skills or experience, and the personal skills to share these with other students in a distance learning environment.


Terms and Conditions – Basis on which scholarships are awarded

  1. There are two levels of scholarship available for prospective students to apply for – £5000 advanced level and £1500 basic level.
  2. You will only be eligible to receive one award.
  3. If you are awarded a scholarship, it is the committee’s decision whether you are offered the advanced £5000 level or basic £1500 level of award.
  4. The scheme is only open to those students who are responsible for paying their own fees. Sponsored or employer funded applicants cannot apply for a scholarship.
  5. Scholarships are course reduction fees; there is no cash equivalent and the scholarship award is automatically deducted from your fees.
  6. A scholarship can only be awarded to applicants who have been made an offer to study on the MA Social Media, MA Online Journalism, MA Music Industries, MA Jazz Studies, MA Music Heritage, MA Screen Studies or MA Creative Industries and Cultural Policy award via distance learning with Birmingham School of Media for entry in September 2012.
  7. Should you wish to study one of the above programmes part-time over three years rather than full-time over one year, your scholarship will reduce your fees on a pro-rata basis, i.e. if you are awarded a basic £1500 and you study part-time, your fees will be reduced by £500 for each year of study (£1500/3 = £500)
  8. No correspondence will be entered into and the committee’s decision is final.
