After this course you will be able to develop innovative approaches to telling stories and engaging users which you can apply to your own area of specialism.

But that’s not all … With this course you have the option of gaining master's level (M) credits which you can use to build your own tailored postgraduate qualification.

Course Outline

Course Structure

Learning will be centred on the latest developments in multimedia and will also involve case study sessions with leading figures from both the news industry and the new media sector. It will draw on your own experiences in the working environment and you will be able to direct a portion of your study to key issues relevant to your practice, in negotiation with the tutor and others. Generic themes will include:

  • Audio and podcasts;
  • Voice;
  • Audio slideshows;
  • Online video;
  • Flash and image maps;
  • Computer Assisted Reporting (CAR);
  • Database journalism;
  • Mapping and geotagging; and
  • Mashups

This course will be taught as a series of face-to face sessions spread over ten weeks. During this time, you will explore a specific area of interest with a range of like-minded media professionals and input from academics and industry guest lecturers. You will also have the opportunity to develop your knowledge further with supported online study during which you will take part in a variety of online exercises, forums and projects. These activities can easily be fitted around your current professional work.

You will have the option of undertaking an assignment/project and on its successful completion will gain 20 Master's level credits. If you go on to participate in and pass more of our courses you can accrue credits towards a Postgraduate Certificate, a Postgraduate Diploma or a Master's.

Course Tutor

Your course will be delivered by Paul Bradshaw, publisher of the Online Journalism Blog and creator of the ‘Model for a 21st Century Newsroom.’ Paul is a freelance journalist and consultant with a distinguished career in publishing. He has contributed to a number of successful books about the internet and journalism, and is currently writing a book on online journalism.

His work has been translated around the world, resulting in invitations to speak in the US, Australia, Norway, the Netherlands, Austria, Brazil and Ukraine. He has been described as "One of the UK's most influential journalism bloggers" by Press Gazette; "A very shrewd commentator" by the BBC's Head of Newsroom; and "the UK's Jeff Jarvis" by the Telegraph's Shane Richmond.

More recently Paul organised the sellout JEEcamp – an unconference for journalism experimenters - and has won funding from Channel 4 and Screen West Midlands to create ‘Help Me Investigate’ - a collaborative platform for investigative journalism.

This course commences on 27 September 2010 and is run over 10 weeks, with additional supported online study.
