Overview

If you would like to increase your knowledge of the laws affecting journalism and be able to work effectively within them, this is the course for you. After this course you will have a thorough understanding of current developments in the law as it applies to broadcast journalism, as well as a detailed knowledge of the courts and the reporting opportunities they present.

But that’s not all … with this course you have the option of gaining Master's level (M) credits which you canuse to build you own tailored postgraduate qualification.

Key Content

Learning will be centred on the latest developments in broadcast law. It will draw on your own experiences in the working environment and you will be able to direct a portion of your study to key issues relevant to your practice, in negotiation with the tutor and others. Generic themes will include:

  • Defamation
  • Contempt of court
  • Court reporting
  • Reporting cases involving children and young people
  • Sexual offences
  • Privacy and Freedom of Expression
  • Breach of Confidence
  • Health and safety issues on news reporting and production
Course Outline

Course Structure

This course will be taught as a series of face-to face sessions delivered either as an intensive week or across selected weekends to suit the applicants. During this time, you will explore a specific area of interest with a range of like-minded media professionals and input from academics and industry guest lecturers. You will also have the opportunity to develop your knowledge further with supported online study during which you will take part in a variety of online exercises, forums and projects. These activities can easily be fitted around your current professional work.

You will have the option of undertaking an assignment/project and on its successful completion will gain 20 Master's level credits. If you go on to participate in and pass more of our courses you can accrue credits towards a Postgraduate Certificate, a Postgraduate Diploma or a Master's.

The course is delivered at Birmingham City University, at the City North Campus.

All course tutors have considerable and continuing experience of applying the law to the daily work of journalism in local and national news rooms. 

Entry Requirements & Applications

Entry Requirements

This course is open to media professionals with an undergraduate degree and the required work experience in a relevant industry (normally a minimum of two years); and to non-graduates with significant and relevant work experience (normally ten years) who can demonstrate an ability to both complete and benefit from the course.
