Course Outline
Course Structure
Learning will be centred on the latest developments in the broadcast industry. It will draw on your own experiences in the working environment and you will be able to direct a portion of your study to key issues relevant to your practice, in negotiation with the tutor and others. Following an introduction to newsgathering, writing and production techniques, you will have the opportunity to create your own news bulletins and short programmes working with real stories.
Generic themes will include:
- Defining news;
- Newsgathering;
- News writing;
- Interviewing styles and skills;
- News and current affairs production skills;
- and Presentation skills
Course Delivery
This course will be taught as a series of face-to face sessions delivered either as an intensive week or across selected weekends to suit the applicants. During this time, you will explore a specific area of interest with a range of like-minded media professionals and input from academics and industry guest lecturers. You will also have the opportunity to develop your knowledge further with supported online study during which you will take part in a variety of online exercises, forums and projects. These activities can easily be fitted around your current professional work.
You will have the option of undertaking an assignment/project and on its successful completion will gain 20 Masters level credits. If you go on to participate in and pass more of our courses you can accrue credits towards a Postgraduate Certificate, a Postgraduate Diploma or a Masters.
Course Tutor
All course tutors are experts in the field of broadcast journalism having had lengthy and ongoing careers at the BBC and in independent radio, television news and online.
This course will run in 2011, for information about dates, please email media@bcu.ac.uk. You will have access to a Virtual Learning Environment and social networking software enabling team working, peer support and mentoring from industry professionals. The course is delivered at Birmingham City University, at the City North Campus.
Entry Requirements & Applications
Entry Requirements
This course is open to media professionals with an undergraduate degree and the required work experience in a relevant industry (normally a minimum of two years); and to non-graduates with significant and relevant work experience (normally ten years) who can demonstrate an ability to both complete and benefit from the course.
