Student Services and Feedback
Accommodation
First year BA (Hons) Acting and Diploma students can apply for accommodation in Halls of Residence operated by Birmingham City University. Birmingham School of Acting's own student union also operates an accommodation service helping new students find accommodation in the private rented sector with current students. The School accommodation days normally take place in August. Details of these and University accommodation are sent to you in June.
Student Handbook
This will be included in your Starter Pack and contains details of course modules, assessment arrangements and general information on the operation of the school and its courses. The Starter Pack will be sent to you in June/July.
Counselling
The School accesses counselling services through the University. This is a confidential service which students can arrange themselves or through their year head.
Student Services and Pastoral Care
A range of services are available through the University and information about them is provided in the Course Handbook. The Admissions and Student Services Manager is responsible for supporting students accessing services and works with the Course Directors, Year Tutors and Registrar.
Confidentiality and Data Protection
As a student you can expect confidentiality in dealings with the school. It is important that tutors are aware of issues that might affect a student's work but information supplied to them is based upon their need to know.
We are not in a position to discuss issues about students, as adults, with any other party, including parents, without the students' consent.
Student Feedback
During the course students are required to complete student feedback questionnaires which are used to assess the training we provide. Through the student union, course representatives are elected who are expected to attend Course Boards and Academic Boards, where issues concerning the school and its courses are discussed, to represent the views of students and communicate with the student body the views and decisions of the school.
Professional Work Opportunities While Training
The School's agency receives a number of requests for students to be engaged in professional work. Wherever possible the school is keen to allow students to audition and undertake this work but obviously we must ensure that the students can still fulfil their commitment to the course and that the work is properly paid and professionally managed.
The Chapman Agency works like any other, taking 10% of the fees earned by students through it. However, the agency is non-profit making. Its sole objective is to increase students' involvement in, and understanding of, the profession and to gain them opportunities for professional experience whilst on the course. All students are represented by the agency and the agency will continue to represent graduates, by mutual agreement, until they find their own representation.
Students wishing to take outside classes or perform in work outside the school must seek the permission of the course director. This includes all occasions when students wish to undertake projects not sourced by the agency.
