Course Overview
Do you want to learn new management skills and techniques that will help you keep costs down when producing and get good value for money? If so, Management Skills and Techniques for Producers and Series Producers is the course for you!
Attending the module will provide core skills for TV producers by giving you the skills, knowledge and understanding of production team and project management through short-run, flexible training.
Worried you’ll have no time? It runs for two days followed by a distance learning period, so is flexible and can easily fit around your working life.
Part of Skillset’s Build Your Own MA programme, this course is brought to you by Birmingham School of Media and NTI Birmingham, at Birmingham City University - one of the foremost media schools within the UK.
Students on this course who successfully completed course assignments are also awarded 20 academic credits towards a Master's degree, as part of Skillset’s UK-wide Build Your Own MA programme.
Entry Requirements
This is a stand-alone module aimed at Producers and Series Producers who are looking to develop their management skills and techniques in order to help them succeed in this competitive industry.
It’s often the case that producers will have no formal training in management, despite it being a key part of their role. This module is designed to address this issue by training producers in effective managerial skills and techniques.
It will appeal to producers who want to explore the role of production manager as a possible next step in their career path.
Course Content
The course covers skills such as how to manage people and build successful, working relationships with your team, crisis management, skill evaluation and editorial guidelines.
In addition, you will look at the bigger picture by constructing a series narrative, learn about the latest and future working practices, build on your communication skills as well as looking in-depth at project management skills and techniques.
It looks at production team and project management in relation to the whole production process and the dynamics within teams.
Course Structure
The course is taught as two one-day face-to-face sessions, followed by distance learning which combines online learning and assessment work.
You’ll have the opportunity to develop your knowledge further with supported online study where you will take part in a variety of online exercises, forums and projects and explore a number of key areas of production management both individually and within groups.
Assessment
Portfolio Assessment (100%)
Students will develop, plan and implement a client set or self-generated production management project and submit a reflective evaluation of the process.
They will also demonstrate their ability to problem solve and manage challenging situations through a number of assessed scenarios.
Students will be assessed through course work, personal skills development and a written reflective report at the end of the module equivalent to 5,000 words.
Tutors
The course is taught by Caroline Officer and Jo Lewis, who will be joined by industry guest speakers to share their experiences and advise students.
There will also be an academic tutor who will be providing support for your assessment and will ensure all learning outcomes are achieved.
Caroline Officer
Caroline Officer is an award-winning series producer who spent 18 years in television production, initially at the BBC and latterly at Endemol Entertainment. Caroline also ran her own digital media company specialising in short form films for travel companies and charities. She is lead academic on the production course modules and manages the University’s Skillset Media Academy status.
Jo Lewis
Jo has extensive experience delivering staff development training across the University, particularly in the areas of project management and presentation skills. Jo is joint module leader for Management Skills & Techniques for Producers & Series Producers
