One of the great theatrical innovators of our time, a man who combines music, movement, video and texts in a way that defies narrative logic but creates a mysterious aesthetic coherence.

The amazing thing about Mr Goebbels's wildly heterogeneous musico-poetical-theatrical collages is that they almost always work. They cohere, they compel, they beguile. And they cohere without any forced hybridization of the components… what seems to bind Mr Goebbels's diversity together is his theatricality.

We are delighted to present two major projects celebrating the work, ideas and artistic practice of Heiner Goebbels.
Heiner Goebbels is one of the world’s leading and most sought after creative artists. During 2012, the year of his 60th birthday, we will welcome him to Birmingham twice.
In March, he forms the focus of our annual contemporary music festival ‘Frontiers +’, during which an Honorary Doctorate will be conferred on him. Alongside new works by Conservatoire students, Frontiers + Heiner Goebbels presents the UK’s first major retrospective of Goebbels’ work.
In June, Heiner Goebbels returns for the UK premiere of Walden as part of the Cultural Olympiad's London 2012 Festival, performed by Ensemble Klang (Netherlands) and Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. As part of its end-of-year celebrations, the Conservatoire Symphony Orchestra will perform parts of his counterpart piece, Surrogate Cities, the day before Walden.
Frontiers + Heiner Goebbels is supported by Arts Council England, the PRS Foundation, RVW Trust, Holst Foundation, the Goethe Institut, Crowne Plaza Birmingham City Centre and Third Ear.
