A Mental Health Nursing student from Birmingham City University has been crowned as one of the winners at this year’s Student Nursing Times Awards.
27-year-old Jodie Kirby from Erdington scooped the top prize to be named student nurse of the year in the mental health category.
The national competition, now in its second year, aims to celebrate the drive and commitment of students and those who go the extra mile. Jodie, who has recently completed her final year studying for the Diploma in Mental Health Nursing, was commended for her commitment in aiming to improve patient care and standards as well as her continued support for fellow students.
Graduate job already lined up
Jodie has now successfully secured a permanent position with Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Trust (BSMHT) where she will take up a role within the mother and baby services unit.
On receiving the award Jodie said: “I am overwhelmed that I achieved this award. It is an amazing achievement that I will take with me throughout my career at BSMHT. I am extremely grateful for all the support and encouragement I received from my family and lecturers at Birmingham City University. I would like to say a special thank you to sue Hine and the bed management team - Andrea Maynard, Richard Clarke, Jim Hanley and Patrick Warr. Working with them has helped me to become a passionate and dedicated nurse with strong patient centred values.”
Jodie was presented with her award at an awards ceremony held at The Grange, London earlier this month. Fellow students Gemma Macken and Lydia Pulford were also shortlisted for the mental health category.
