Health students to put skills into practice in life-like accident scenario

More than 100 health students will put their clinical and communication skills into practice later this month, when they join firefighters to help manage a major incident in a dramatic accident scenario.

A realistic crash with multiple casualties will be simulated at the University’s City South campus, on Wednesday 25 March. Health students and West Midlands Fire and Police services, will be on standby to put their expert training into practice in the real-time scenario.

This will be the third event of its kind to be hosted by the faculty, and following the success of last year’s event, is expected to be bigger and better.

Students from other faculties are also key to the preparations of the day, dealing with the behind the scenes duties and producing films and photography of the action as it unfolds.

We asked Trevor Wain and Jodie Hemsley, Paramedic Students who took part in last year's major incident simulation:

What was the highlight of the day?

Trevor: "Learning more in one day about your colleagues and the job than you could in years. The sense of camaraderie and achievement you feel when you finish."

Jodie: "I think my highlight of the day was all of it: working alongside other services, the university being turned into a hospital, and really pulling together as a team and getting some good hands on practical experience with real life people. The make-up team did a fantastic job with the patients to make it as realistic as possible."
