Volunteering

Give a little, gain a lot and prepare yourself for a career in health or social care.

Why volunteer?
  • Make a difference to someone and give something back
  • Meet likeminded people, have fun and improve your health and wellbeing
  • Boost your CV, bridge employment gaps, gain referees and future contacts, and improve your employment prospects
  • Develop current skills and gain new skills, knowledge and experience that you can refer to in interviews
Where do I start?

Pick the volunteering opportunity that’s right for you.

  • Think about what you enjoy doing and what skills you could offer
  • Think about the type of work that suits your career aspirations and personal goals, then research volunteer opportunities to match
  • Also, think about the type of patients/service users you would be working with once qualified, what skills they would need you to have, and where you could best develop these.

For example, in a caring role, you will need to be a great communicator. Volunteering for a charity’s telephone helpline would be a great way to develop these skills ready for when you need them in your professional career.

How do I contact organisations?

Make contact with your chosen organisation by email, phone, social networking sites or any other means of contact.

Don’t be put off if you can’t see any volunteering information on your chosen organisation’s website. Make contact with them and put the idea to them. This will show that you are keen to get involved and that you are a go-getter!

Who can help me?

You’re not alone!

Here at Birmingham City University there are lots of people to help get you on the right track!

Things to think about
  • Remember to maintain a good balance between your academic, work and social life – a skill in itself!
  • You may need a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
  • Ensure your own personal safety and do not work in any environments you feel unsafe in
  • Be professional. You still need to show up on time or give notice if you are unable to attend
