Philip has been a member of the ADD (Academic Development Department) for over ten years. His core roles are ‘RPL Advisor' and 'Education Facilitator'. In this latter role, Philip supports students across the full range of academic writing skills. As RPL Advisor he facilitates university applicants and ongoing students to appraise their prior learning in order to gain credits which can subsequently contribute towards their BCU programme award.

Philip's role has evolved substantially during his tenure. His prior profession as a secondary school mathematics teacher has given him relevant background experience to support students with the skills required (e.g. for drug calculations in Nursing).

Numeracy skills readily expand into statistics skills and this has given Philip the opportunity to support students across the faculty at all levels, but in particular, level 6 and higher, in their ability to read and understand the bewildering array of statistics reporting common to much of the relevant research.

The final strand of the skills base Philip utilises in his support is 'Research Support' which utilises his prior experiences as a Physicist. In addition to teaching Physics on the ODP programmes, he extensively teaches on Evidence Based Practice modules at levels 5, 6 and 7 (Masters' level) and is a regular supervisor to students undertaking Masters Degrees. In addition to supporting numerous research-active members of staff, he also supervises at PhD level.
