How to launch your career in the video gaming industry

Students from the New Technology Institute were welcomed back to their summer semester with a jam-packed industry careers event. Connecting students with potential employers offers the opportunity to gain valuable insight into the process of securing a career following education.

Director of the New Technology Institute, Oliver Williams said of their first summer semester;

“Treat this semester like your first job in the games industry, the best way to prove you can make a game, is to make a game”

Jasper Barnes - Recruitment Consultant from UBISOFT opened the floor. Jasper was able to shed some light on how to apply for a job role within the company. Students really engaged during the conversation, wanting to know more about the steps involved and what it is really like to work within the company, to which Jasper replied “extremely fun!”

Nick Duncombe from Playground Games – one of the largest independent developers in the UK, also shared inside knowledge on how to secure a Role in a AAA studio.

 “The great thing about working for a AAA studio is that you will be working with and sitting next to colleagues who have had experience working on some huge games.  You’ll also have the opportunity to specialise and will be working on games that have a larger player audience.”

 Nick shared some tips on to how to handle SKYPE interviews, the importance of researching the managers, what not to wear to an interview and most importantly to keep playing.

To conclude the event, Indie Developer- Dan Walters shared his knowledge on being an independent and how it differs to being a part of a larger company. He also informed the audience that he has previously hired students from the New Technology Institute, which was very encouraging to hear.

All of the guest speakers left time for Q&A and students were immediately took the opportunity to ask questions which helped to put their current work and plans for the future into perspective.
