Attending one of these days is the best way to find out what it’s like to study at Birmingham City University's New Technology Institute. Even if you've already come along to one of our Open Days, the Applicant Taster Day provides you with that extra level of detail to inform your choice. It is also an opportunity for us to find out about you and what drives you to explore your subject interest.

Please arrive at midday on the ground floor of Curzon Building in our City Centre campus. Relax and have a drink with us before the day officially begins.

Welcome to the New Technology Institute

Meet your Head of School Oliver Williams, as he explains the day ahead and what you can expect to gain from it. It’s also a great opportunity to network with staff and other students who could be starting the course at the same time as you.

1.30pm - 3.30pm

Get hands-on with a workshop sessions

Kick-start your learning and get to know your tutors and fellow students a little better, with a workshop session depending upon your chosen course.

  • BSc (Hons) Video Game Development: Discover new skills and ideas as we demonstrate key technology systems and software used in the making and development of video games.
  • BA (Hons) Video Game Digital Art: Take part in a Creative Art Workshop where we’ll teach you think a little differently, watch as we demo digital art workflows and learn as we investigate current careers in video game digital art.
  • BA (Hons) Video Game Design and Production: Take part in our Game Design Creative Ideas session as we introduce you to an existing game and discover between us how to take it to the next level.
  • BA (Hons) Digital Marketing: Take part in our Marketing Challenge – We’ll introduce you to a real life marketing problem and ask you to solve it. Let’s see what you come up with! A fun activity and a fantastic way to get to know your new colleagues!
  • BA (Hons) Film Business and Promotion: “Independent cinema is alive and well and living in television.” Alan McQueen – NTI lecturer. What do the films Limitless, Westworld and Lethal Weapon have in common? Take part in our challenge and we’ll discover the answer together, as we investigate the changing nature of the industry’s business models and consumer consumption of film and streaming TV services.

3.30pm - 5.00pm

Portfolio Reviews and 1:2:1 drop in sessions

If you’re applying for BA (Hons) Video Game Digital Art & BA (Hons) Video Game Design and Production and have chosen to submit a physical portfolio before we make an offer, we’ll complete your portfolio review in this session. It’s a great chance for you to talk us through your work so far and show us what you can do. Click here for our guide to acing your portfolio

If you’re applying for BA (Hons) Video Game Development, BA (Hons) Digital Marketing or BA (Hons) Film Business and Promotion you will have an hour of 1:2:1’s and drop in Q&A sessions. Any questions you have, this is the time to ask them, so make sure you take advantage. If you’re applying for BA (Hons) Video Game Digital Art & BA (Hons) Video Game Design you’re also welcome to join these sessions before or after your portfolio review.
